Shannon taskforce will be able to recommend legislation
The proposed River Shannon taskforce will have the power to recommend new legislation to the Government.
The Cabinet is expected to publish the terms of reference for the taskforce this week after announcing its establishment during severe flooding this month.
It will include a number of government agencies, including the ESB, Bord na Móna, Inland Fisheries and local authorities, and will be accountable to the Oireachtas environment committee.
A government source told the Irish Independent that “the taskforce can recommend a law change to Cabinet”.
The source added: “It will ensure that as the taskforce meets, they can say to government: ‘this problem needs to be addressed with legislation’.”
However, some opposition leaders have branded the taskforce as a “talking shop” and called for a new statutory authority.
