Sinn Féin bids to ban zero-hour contracts in Northern Ireland
Sinn Féin has launched a bill to ban zero-hour contracts in Northern Ireland.
Jemma Dolan, the party’s workers’ rights spokesperson, will launch the bill in the Northern Ireland Assembly today.
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) estimated in 2018 that there were 14,000 people on zero-hour contracts in Northern Ireland, representing around 1.3 per cent of people in employment.
Ms Dolan said: “People employed under these contracts are faced with deep uncertainty and stress and no guarantees on what they will earn or what hours they will work. This needs to change; workers and families deserve fairness and certainty.
“This bill will replace zero-hour contracts with banded hour contracts, which will ensure workers are given guarantees over their minimum and maximum working hours each week.
“Over the next number of weeks, I am encouraging trade unions, businesses, workers and MLAs to support workers and families and Sinn Féin’s attempt to ban these contracts.”
