Solicitor appointed to Consumer Council for Northern Ireland

Solicitor Orla Sheils has been appointed to the board of the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland (CCNI).

Ms Sheils, along with seven other board members and a new chair and deputy chair, has been appointed to the board for a four-year term from 17 June 2024.

A solicitor qualified to practice in Northern Ireland and England and Wales, her legal career has involved her working in private practice and the public sector, across the Tribunal Service and public inquiries.

She is passionate about consumer affairs, safeguarding the interests of consumers in Northern Ireland and has practical experience of successfully resolving consumer issues.

She has had responsibility for managing high-profile, high-value and complex cases before the courts in both jurisdictions and brings over 20 years’ experience advising clients in a number of areas of law to the role.

Ms Sheils also provides strategic direction and guidance regarding good governance to clients and currently serves as a paid board member of the Labour Relations Agency (LRA) and an audit and risk assurance committee member.

Economy minister Conor Murphy said: “The Consumer Council champions and safeguards the interests of local consumers and is rightly seen as a trusted voice. I am pleased to appoint a new chair and deputy chair, along with eight members, to the board of CCNI and I wish them every success.

“They will provide strengthened leadership and direction for the organisation as it continues to support consumers and advise government on consumer choice, rights and protection during these very challenging times for consumers and businesses.”
