Solicitor caught with cocaine in prison avoids custody
Dublin solicitor Aonghus McCarthy has been spared jail for bringing cocaine into Mountjoy Prison after donating €1,250 to a drugs charity.
Mr McCarthy told Dublin District Court that he was not aware there was cocaine (around 0.33 grams, worth €26) in his wallet when he made a professional visit to the prison in 2017.
He was told last month that Judge Gerry Jones would strike out the case if Mr McCarthy donated €1,250 to the charity Merchant Quay’s drug rehabilitation projects.
The matter came back to court before Judge Gráinne O’Neill yesterday and a receipt for the donation was presented. She affirmed the earlier order by Judge Jones and struck out the case.
Mr McCarthy had been excused from attending the hearing while representing clients elsewhere in the same courthouse.
