NI: Street party organisers threatened with prosecution
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has warned the organisers of a planned Belfast street party that they face prosecution if they go ahead with plans to block a main arterial route without permission.
The Maverick bar on Donegall Street has announced plans for a “block party” which will see part of the road closed off by a “crowd management company”.
PSNI chief inspector Robert Murdie told The Irish News that appropriate action would be taken, though there is “no specific legislation regarding road closures in Northern Ireland”.
He said police would not support the closure of a main arterial route.
Mr Murdie added: “The event organiser is best placed to determine whether or not their event can go ahead, but for absolute clarity, any attempt to close or block a public road, will be met with an appropriate and proportionate police response.
“If anyone chooses to break the law, police will ensure that everything possible is done to bring those responsible before the courts and face the consequences of their actions.”
