Suspended Ballaghaderreen solicitor’s client account deficit could total €600,000
The deficit on suspended Ballaghaderreen solicitor Declan O’Callaghan’s client account could be more than €600,000, the Irish Independent reports.
The High Court heard yesterday that Mr O’Callaghan had lodged a cheque for €395,000 to address the deficit, though €144,000 had bounced due to a problem with the lender.
Mr O’Callaghan was ordered in July not to practise as a solicitor pending the outcome of Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal proceedings focused on allegations that he withdrew €344,000 in excessive fees from a bereaved child’s €454,840 estate.
However, Brendan Steen, the solicitor appointed a joint manager of his former law firm Kilraine O’Callaghan, had identified an extra €212,000 to be paid on top of funds already paid.
That made a deficit of around €600,000, the court was told.
Mr O’Callaghan has given an undertaking to pay whatever the deficit amounts to.
