Thousands of letters to wrongly-convicted motorists reissued
Thousands of letters to motorists, notifying them that their wrongly-imposed convictions and penalty points will be quashed, have been reissued because the State did not receive a response.
Answering a written parliamentary question, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said a total of 9,380 letters had been sent by registered post to affected motorists by 19 July 2017.
However, Mr Flanagan (pictured) confirmed that 3,888 letters have since been reissued to motorists who did not respond to the first letter.
He said it was “necessary to print these letters for a second time for hand delivery in order to ensure receipt”.
A further 2,500 letters will be issued, bringing the total number of letters to 12,330. A total of 14,700 convictions were wrongly imposed.
Jonathan O’Brien, Sinn Féin’s justice spokesperson, told The Irish Times that gardaí had not yet identified all of the affected drivers.
He added: “It shows up the gardaí’s lack of IT that they are unable to track these motorists.”
