TikTok ban case to be heard in US Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) will today hear a last-ditch attempt by TikTok owner ByteDance to prevent the video-sharing platform from being banned in the US.
Under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act (PAFACA), the Chinese-owned platform will be banned in the US later this month as a “foreign adversary controlled application”.
ByteDance has been accused by US politicians of having links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which it denies. The company has defiantly said it will not sell TikTok to another owner.
The ban is currently set to be imposed on 19 January 2025, a day before Donald Trump returns to the White House.
Mr Trump first proposed a ban on TikTok during his first presidency, but it became a reality under President Joe Biden.
More recently, Mr Trump has suggested that he now disagrees with a ban and could overturn it. His lawyers have asked SCOTUS to consider postponing the implementation date of the ban to give him the opportunity to intervene as president.
