Tips paid by credit and debit cards to be ‘fairly shared’ under proposed law
Hospitality workers will be entitled to a fair share of tips paid by credit and debit cards under plans approved by Cabinet.
Employment Affairs Minister Regina Doherty has been given permission to pursue the measure alongside previously-announced plans to prevent tips from being used to pay a worker’s salary, the Irish Independent reports.
The Cabinet approved the draft heads of the Payment of Wages (Amendment) Bill 2019 in July and the law is expected to be approved early next year.
The bill proposes to amend the Payment of Wages Act to ensure that tips and gratuities cannot be used to satisfy a person’s contractual wages, as well as requiring employers to clearly display their policy on how tips, gratuities and service charges are distributed.
Ms Doherty said: “I want to go as far as I can in securing for low-paid workers a legal entitlement to their hard-earned tips.”
