Trump visit leads to court delays as gardaí redeployed
Criminal cases before the Irish courts have been delayed due to gardaí being seconded as part of the security detail for US President Donald Trump, who is visiting Ireland for the first time today.
A burglary case before Cork District Court and a minor road traffic case before Clonakilty District Court could not proceed yesterday, the Irish Examiner reports.
In the road traffic case, Judge James McNulty refused a defence application to dismiss the case on the basis that the defendant was being prejudiced by any delay in the case as he was unable to get insurance on his vehicle.
Judge McNulty said: “This is exceptional – we have one of the greatest statesmen of our time visiting our shores at this time. That necessitates protecting him and that necessitates the key witness not being here.”
Meanwhile, in the burglary case, Garda Inspector James Hallahan told the court that the prosecuting garda was not available to come to court because he had been placed on another duty due to Mr Trump’s visit.
