UK cabinet minister dinged for LinkedIn claim to be a solicitor

A senior UK government minister was told by the English solicitors’ regulator to stop describing himself as a former solicitor when he had in fact dropped out of his traineeship to become an MP.
The Solicitors’ Regulatory Authority (SRA) wrote to the business secretary Jonathan Reynolds in January in relation to the claim, which appeared on his LinkedIn page, according to The Telegraph.
Mr Reynolds had been training as a solicitor with Addleshaw Goddard in Manchester but quit in 2010 to focus on his first election campaign, in which he was successful in becoming a Labour MP.
His LinkedIn page previously made reference to him being both a “trainee solicitor” and a “solicitor”, but now only refers to him as having been a “trainee solicitor”, the BBC reports.
A spokesperson for the UK government said it was an “administrative error” which has been corrected.
The opposition Conservative Party has urged the SRA to consider prosecuting Mr Reynolds, alleging that he has also referred to having been a solicitor on other occasions.
However, a spokesperson for the SRA said: “Our regulatory role is to protect the interests of users of legal services.
“We are aware of this issue, however having considered all factors involved, there is no need for us to take any action.”
