UK has highest prison population in European Union
Britain has the highest prison population in the EU with nearly 100,000 people in jail, according to new findings.
A report by the Council of Europe found that only Turkey, which has locked up 192,627 people, has more inmates than the UK.
England had 85,134 prisoners at the end of June 2016 while Scotland had 7,657 and Northern Ireland 1,500.
The combined figure outranked all other EU member states.
France has a prisoner population of 68,514 while Germany’s number stands at 64, 397.
Scotland’s prison population rate is 142.4 inmates per 100,000 inhabitants – compared to a Europe-wide average of 127.2.
The report found that there were 7,361 prisoners serving life sentences in England and Wales.
