UK to appeal legacy law ruling
The UK government has confirmed it will appeal a ruling by the High Court in Belfast that a controversial legacy law is in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The court ruled last week that the conditional immunity scheme under the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 breaches ECHR rights and the Windsor Framework.
The Northern Ireland Office (NIO) said it remains committed to the legislation, the BBC reports.
A spokesperson said: “We remain committed to implementing the Legacy Act and delivering the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery (ICRIR) to provide better outcomes for victims and survivors of the Troubles by giving them more information about what happened to their loved ones.”
