US: Parents successfully evict 30-year-old son who refuses to leave family home
A judge has ordered a 30-year-old man to move out of his parents’ house following a legal battle.
At New York State’s Supreme Court yesterday, Justice Donald Greenwood attempted to convince Michael Rotondo to leave the family home in Camillus, near Syracuse, of his own volition.
However, Mr Rotondo, who represented himself, argued he was entitled to a further six months living with his parents.
Justice Greenwood said the demand was “outrageous” and issued him with an eviction order.
Mr Rotondo replied that the eviction order was outrageous.
Christina and Mark Rotondo had taken their son to court as a last resort following months of sending him formal letters asking him to leave.
One letter states: “Michael, after a discussion with your mother, we have decided that you must leave this house immediately. You have 14 days to vacate. You will not be allowed to return. We will take whatever actions are necessary to enforce this decision.”
After these failed, the Rotondos tried to pay their son to leave. They gave him $1,100 “so you can find a place to stay” and also offered him advice.
“There are jobs available even for those with a poor work history like you,” a letter from 18 February reads. “Get one – you have to work!”
Mr Rotondo said he did not live in his parents’ basement but had his own room — and did his own laundry.
He added that he had his own business but when asked to expand on this he would only say: “My business is my business.”
