US: Three officers convicted over failing to stop George Floyd’s murder
Three former US police officers have been convicted of violating the civil rights of George Floyd by failing to prevent his murder by their colleague.
Mr Floyd’s murder by Derek Chauvin, who knelt on him for more than nine minutes, sparked worldwide Black Lives Matter protests. Mr Chauvin was convicted of murder last year and sentenced to 22-and-a-half years’ imprisonment.
Now three other former Minneapolis police officers – Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane – have been convicted of violating his civil rights by showing indifference to his medical needs, CNN reports.
The three men are currently free on bond pending sentencing proceedings which will begin this week, though imprisonment is rare for civil rights offences.
