A short video has been published on the Oireachtas website to highlight the private members’ bill legal advisory and drafting service for members.

Backbench TDs and Senators can receive assistance with their legislative proposals through the service, which is considered unique among European countries.

The service is part of the Office of Parliamentary Legal Advisors (OPLA), independent legal advisors within the Houses of the Oireachtas Service.

“As a legislator, you will want to prepare well-researched, legally sound proposals for the policy matters which are important to you,” Cathy Egan BL, who leads the private members’ bill advisory team, says in the video.

“Navigating through bills, regulations and policy frameworks can be challenging, as is the technical side of drafting legislation.

“Our private members’ bill service is here to guide and support you every step of the way, offering a complete end-to-end service for ensuring a sound legal basis for your proposal and drafting your bill.”

Members are not obliged to use the service but over 50 per cent of members in the 33rd Dáil and the 26th Seanad used the service at least once.
