Westminster committee launches inquiry into Windsor Framework

A new House of Lords committee has launched an inquiry into “Northern Ireland’s voice” in the context of the post-Brexit Windsor Framework.

The Northern Ireland scrutiny committee, which was established in January, will begin taking oral evidence from a panel of academic and legal experts tomorrow.

It will hear first from George Peretz KC, barrister at Monckton Chambers; Dr Clare Rice, research fellow at the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh; and Roderick Crawford, senior researcher at conservative think tank Policy Exchange.

The committee has also published a call for written evidence, inviting submissions until 5pm on Wednesday 30 April.

Committee chair Lord Carlile of Berriew said: “I am delighted to announce this first inquiry by the committee. It comes at a time of change in Europe and in the UK’s relationship with Europe.

“In this context it is crucial that Northern Ireland’s voice should be heard, and its best interests protected.

“The committee will seek to bring fresh clarity to the complex legislation and arrangements of and surrounding the Windsor Framework.”
