X to pay legal costs to George Galloway in defamation case

Elon Musk’s X, formerly Twitter, has been ordered to pay legal costs in an Irish court case brought by former British MP George Galloway.

Belfast-based KRW LAW LLP represented Mr Galloway in his defamation case brought in Dublin — where X’s European headquarters are based — after the platform labelled his account “Russian state-affiliated media”.

The label began to appear on the controversial politician’s profile in 2022, prior to Mr Musk’s acquisition of the platform. The labelling system was later abolished altogether in April 2023.

Mr Galloway denies affiliations with the Russian state and alleges the label was defamatory and damaging to his reputation.

X, which was late in filing its defence, according to Mr Galloway’s lawyers, denies his allegations.

The High Court in Dublin this week ordered X to pay the legal costs of Mr Galloway’s motion and directed both sides to submit sworn affidavits attesting to the truth of their claims by 30 January 2025.

KRW partner Kevin Winters said the case “underscores the broader challenge for social media platforms in navigating accountability for their past actions, particularly in the context of evolving policies and leadership changes”.
