Aer Lingus did not breach airport contract, High Court rules

The High Court in Belfast has ruled that Irish flag carrier Aer Lingus did not breach its contract when it pulled out of Belfast International Airport (BIA) in 2012.
The airline was accused of breaching a ten-year contract signed in 2007 when it shifted its services to George Best Belfast City Airport three years ago.
BIA, represented by Belfast solicitors Carson McDowell, wanted £20 million in damages from the firm.
The airport’s lawyers argued that the airline had entered “a binding commitment” based on letters exchanged in the negotiation process.
However, the High Court today ruled that a crucial letter setting out terms of the agreement between the airline and airport “did not adopt language of obligation”.
