AIB most likely bank to sue its customers

AIB is the Irish bank most likely to sue its customers in the High Court, according to analysis by The Irish Times.

The paper found AIB applied for debt summary judgments on 755 occasions last year.

Although this represents a 37 per cent decline on its 2016 peak, it is more than double that at the next highest bank, Bank of Ireland, which sought 308 debt summary judgments last year, down from 326.

KBC made 141 applications while Dankse Bank made 33.

AIB said it only files proceedings “where a borrower does not fully engage”, while BOI said it does so “in circumstances where the bank determines that the borrower is in a position to repay the money owed”.
