Legislation to loosen Northern Ireland’s alcohol licensing laws has been submitted to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The Licensing and Registration of Clubs (Amendment) Bill was introduced by Communities Minister Paul Givan this morning.

It would allow licensed pubs and nightclubs to serve alcohol for an extra hour - until 2am - up to 12 times a year. On the Thursday before Easter, serving time will be extended from midnight to 1am.

Introducing the bill, Mr Givan said: “Some of the measures in the Bill will, I hope, contribute to a reduction in alcohol-related harm by encouraging those who choose to drink to do so sensibly.

“I believe that the Bill strikes the right balance between controlling the sale of alcoholic drinks on the one hand and offering some support to the hospitality sector on the other.

“It is clear from the consultation responses and discussion with stakeholders and other parties that there is significant support for these proposals. On that basis, I hope that all parties will give the Bill their support and allow it to move to Committee Stage.”
