Lord Justice Fulford, Vice President of the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division), has outlined the default position for hearings conducted online during the coronavirus pandemic.

Business attire should be worn by anyone appearing online, but court dress is not required.

Once all hearings are virtual, business attire will also be worn by the judiciary too.

LJ Fulford added: “Advocates need to consider the ‘backdrop’ when they are linking remotely from home, chambers or an office – it should be neutral and appropriate for a court hearing, if this is possible.”

Finally, advocates linking remotely are not required to rise when the court assembles.
