An Garda Síochána has spent more than €525,000 on its legal representation in commissions of investigation over the past two years, the Sunday Independent reports.
The force spent €237,555 employing seven lawyers over two years as part of the O’Higgins Commission, which investigated allegations made by Sergeant Maurice McCabe and uncovered a number of cases where Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald said “victims of crime were not well served”.
More than half of the total spend went to two individual lawyers: Colm Smyth SC earned €72,935, while Garret Byrne earned €68,403.
Meanwhile, the force’s total legal spend in the MacLochlainn Commission totalled €288,438.
