Dr Omar Hassan Khalafalla Mohamed, 30, claimed the Medical Council Fitness-to-Practice inquiry which found him guilty following an 11-day hearing was intended to discredit him because tried to expose colleagues who were working under falsified credentials.

In one instance he was accused of mistaking an X-ray of an ankle for an elbow. Mr Hassan said the claim related to a training session in which there had been a “lot of confusion”. Clearly.

In an interview with RTÉ’s Liveline, he said he was talking about another patient when presented with the X-ray.

Pushed by the host, he added: “I don’t recall that particular training session. We are in training sessions all the time.”

In response to the “audible gasp” heard when he made the mistake, Mr Hassan said there were many reasons such a noise could be made during a training session.
