Richard ‘Dickie’ Scruggs, a disbarred lawyer who was jailed for corruption and attempting to bribe a judge, has been named as the world’s richest solicitor.
Money Inc. estimates the Mississippi lawyer’s wealth at 1.7 billion dollars. The average earning for a lawyer in the US is $133,000 a year.
Scruggs made his fortune as a leading figure in the huge tobacco and asbestos litigation of the 1990s.
But in 2008, Scruggs, now 70, was jailed for judicial corruption and served six years in a federal prison but retained his fortune.
He now runs a charity helping disadvantaged adults obtain the equivalent of a high school education.
