And finally… door of perception

An Edinburgh woman who painted her front door an upbeat pink has been threatened with a £20,000 (around €23,000) fine.

Aggrieved neighbours complained after Miranda Dickson broke with the sober colour scheme of the Scottish capital’s historic New Town, The Times reports.

Conservative councillor Joanna Mowat described the colour as “Pepto-Bismol”, adding: “It’s the New Town of Edinburgh — it’s a World Heritage Site. It’s not Balamory, where pink would be perfectly appropriate.”

City officials said the door is “not in keeping” with the “historic character” of the area because it deviates from the black doors and white windows typical of neighbouring homes.

A spokesperson said: “The owner agreed the door would be repainted but as this work has not been carried out we are taking enforcement action requiring them to repaint the door.”
