And finally… doughnuts

A pair of young men have been forced to pay thousands after they were shown doing doughnuts in their cars in a viral Facebook video.

Martin Hayden, 25, and Iarfhlaith O’Brien, 21, have agreed to pay €3,500 each to the court poor box to reduce their charge of dangerous driving to one of careless driving, The Irish Times reports.

But the pair will still be forced to install speedometers in their cars for the next three years, limiting their top speed to 100 kph, in addition to the imposition of penalty points and a fresh conviction.

Hayden and O’Brien reportedly completed 11 doughnuts in the course of a minute at the Rally of the Lakes in Co Kerry in April.

A video of the stunt, filmed from an overhead drone, was uploaded to YouTube and seen 220,000 times on Facebook, gardaí said.

Judge James O’Connor of Killarney District Court ordered the men to pay €3,500 and adjourned the matter to 21 November.
