And finally… fancy that
Students have been given a list of offensive costumes they have been told not to wear for Halloween, including cowboy outfits.
Also in the list of proscribed dress, issued by Kent University’s student union, are the clothes of priests, nuns, Nazis, Crusaders, ISIS bombers, Native Americans, Israeli soldiers, “chavs” and those portraying a gender or sexuality the wearer doesn’t identify with “if the purpose is to belittle”.
However, students are permitted to dress up as Ancient Greeks, Romans, doctors, nurses, cavemen and aliens.
The union said: “We empower students to be creative, whilst also ensuring all students feel welcome and safe.
“Students groups are free to engage in fancy dress whilst ensuring they abide by the Fancy Dress Guidelines which include being offensive, discriminatory and prejudice to an individual’s race, gender, disability or sexual orientation or based on stereotypes.
“Fancy Dress themes should also not be centred around political group stereotypes or the stereotypes of different levels of perceived class in the means to diminish their worth or validity.
“This again would promote an unsafe and exclusive campus to which we do not tolerate.”
In one response, a Kent resident referred to the students as “ten-gallon prats”.
