A video of the fish and images including one showing its googly eyes slipping off have been circulating on social media.

Competitor fishmongers in Kuwait reacted to the practice by advertising their own fish as being “without cosmetics”, with one including a picture of a fish with coloured contact lenses.

In July another fish seller in the country was accused of inserting steel nails into his wares to add to their weight and hence market value.
