And finally… gladiators win legal battle

Costumed gladiators can return to major tourist spots in Rome after winning a legal battle against local authorities, The Local reports.

Rome authorities had banned the performers on the basis they overcharge tourists, and in some cases have allegedly pick-pocketed them.

A regional administrative court overturned the ban yesterday following a challenge by a representative body for centurions and street artists.

Judges accepted the “extraordinary context of the Jubilee Year” in 2016 made extra security measures necessary, but the “indiscriminate and repeated bans” were not justified a year later.

But the long-standing conflict may not be over, as Rome’s councillor for Economic Development, Tourism and Labour has confirmed plans to bring in new legislation following the ruling - saying that the Italian capital could not be “held hostage” by street artists.
