And finally… ring-a-ding

A Dutch animal rights campaigner whose Swiss citizenship application was twice refused because of her “big mouth” and vocal opposition to Switzerland’s iconic cowbells has finally won her battle for naturalisation.

Nancy Holten, 43, was born in the Netherlands but has lived in Switzerland since she was eight years old. She speaks Swiss German fluently and has raised her own children in Switzerland.

But despite meeting all the legal prerequisties for citizenship, her two previous applications were rejected by her local council.

Under the Swiss system, citizenship applications are first considered by local authorities rather than at a federal level.

A local spokesperson said in January that Ms Holten’s previous applications were refused because she had sought too much media attention for her campaigns against cowbells, hunting and piglet racing.

One politician said Ms Holten, also a vegan, had a “big mouth”.

But her neighbours will have to get used to it after her third and final application went over their heads to be approved by cantonal authorities, The Local reports.
