Bar of Northern Ireland affirms support for American lawyers

The Bar of Northern Ireland has said it is “resolute” in its support for American lawyers targeted by Donald Trump’s administration.

Legal bodies around the world have issued statements of solidarity with lawyers, law firms and the American Bar Association (ABA) in recent weeks.

The Bar of Northern Ireland signed an international statement published in March as well as a statement published by the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) earlier this month.

Bar Council chair Donal Lunny KC said today: “The Bar of Northern Ireland joins with practitioners across the world in expressing our concern at recent direct, specific and targeted assaults against lawyers.

“The profession must be permitted to perform our professional duties in facilitating fair and equal access to justice for all without threat or intimidation.

“We are resolute in our support for our American colleagues and colleagues across the world facing threat and intimidation.”
