Barrister’s recommendations on councillors’ pay to be brought into effect
The recommendations of the independent review on the role and remuneration of local councillors will be brought into effect from July, ministers have announced.
Sara Moorhead SC, a prominent barrister who has practised in Dublin for more than three decades, was appointed in June 2018 to undertake the review.
Her final report recommended an increase in councillors’ salary from €17,000 to €25,000, alongside a significant reduction in their entitlement to unvouched expenses.
Peter Burke, minister of state for local government and planning, said: “The proposals approved by government take account of the recommendations of the independent review of the role and remuneration of local authority elected members, led by Ms Sara Moorhead SC, published in 2020, and subsequent feedback from councillors and their representative bodies.
“The government has met its Programme for Government commitment to implement the Moorhead Report within 12 months. The reforms approved will come into effect from 1 July.”
