NI: Belfast solicitor John Finucane nominated to run for Westminster again
Belfast solicitor John Finucane, the current Lord Mayor of Belfast and son of murdered lawyer Pat Finucane, has been nominated for selection as Sinn Féin’s Westminster election candidate in North Belfast.
Mr Finucane, partner at Finucane Toner, previously contested the seat for the party in 2017, winning 19,159 votes (41.7 per cent) but failing to unseat DUP MP Nigel Dodds with 21,240 votes (46.2 per cent).
He was interviewed by Irish Legal News last month about his legal career and term as Lord Mayor.
Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly nominated Mr Finucane ahead of the party’s North Belfast selection convention this Sunday 22 September.
Mr Kelly said: “Given the catastrophe that Westminster is attempting to force upon our island it is vital that we continue to show Dublin, Europe and the world that we reject Brexit, borders and the DUP.
“I am confident that in John Finucane we can return a pro-Remain anti-Brexit MP in North Belfast.”
