NI: Bloody Sunday prosecution decision to be made this summer
The Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has said it is aiming to make a decision on whether to prosecute ex-soldiers in connection to the Bloody Sunday killings in 1972 by the end of summer.
The PSNI sent a report to the PPS in December 2016 after completing interviews under caution of a number of ex-soldiers.
According to The Irish Times, a spokesperson for the PPS has now said: “As indicated at the outset of the PPS’s consideration of these files, the volume of material and complexity of legal issues involved have made it difficult to provide a definitive timeframe for decision.
“While there are still a number of important legal matters to be dealt with before final decisions can issue, the PPS is optimistic of being able to take those decisions before the end of the summer.”
The PPS has also written to the families of the victims to set out a detailed explanation of their progress on the case.
