Cocaine user invited to avoid conviction with donation

A man who was caught with almost €3,000 worth of cocaine a decade ago has been told he can avoid a conviction by making a charitable donation.

Rory Linnane, 36, returned from Australia to face the long-standing charges at Tallaght District Court after contacting a solicitor’s firm in Dublin.

Mr Linnane, who has no previous convictions, admitted the offences of simple possession and possession for sale or supply.

Judge Patrick Clyne said he would apply the Probation Act if Mr Linnane made a donation of €2,700 - matching the value of the cocaine - to the Merchant’s Quay Project.

The case has been put back for a fortnight to allow the payment.
