DCU students compete in ECtHR moot competition

Students at Dublin City University (DCU) have represented Ireland at Europe’s largest European Court of Human Rights moot court competition in Switzerland.
The three-person team of Niko Kawonczyk, Edel Daly and Holly Heeney travelled to St Gallen to compete in the Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition, now in its 13th year.
The trio pled in the fictional pleadings in the matter of David Borg v. the State of Zemland, competing against over 70 teams from across Council of Europe states, ranging from Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom.
The team submitted pleadings on behalf both the applicant and the state concerning the potential violation of Article 10, and Article 14 in conjunction with Article 10, of the ECHR in a fictional case surrounding the cancellation of planned lectures of a university lecturer with controversial opinions and views.
Having competed in the preliminary rounds in Switzerland, the DCU team is now awaiting news on whether they have qualified for the final oral round, which will take place in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
