Denis O’Brien lodges appeal against Dáil case ruling

Businessman Denis O’Brien has lodged an appeal against the High Court’s decision to dismiss his case against Dáil Éireann, the Dáil Committee on Procedures and Privileges and the State over comments made in the Dáil about his financial affairs.

Mr O’Brien had sought to challenge utterances made on the floor of the Dáil which disclosed information protected by a High Court injunction.

In April, Ms Justice Úna Ní Raifeartaigh held that the case was non-justicable due to the separation of powers between the Oireachtas and the courts under the Irish Constitution.

The Irish Times reports that he will seek to have his appeal sent from the Court of Appeal directly to the Supreme Court because it involves important constitutional issues.

He will also seek to overturn the High Court’s decision not to award him any of the estimated €1 million in costs.
