Department of Justice wasted €4m on unsuitable building

The cash-strapped Department of Justice spent nearly €4 million renting a building in Dublin that it never used – and could never use because it lacked the required planning permission.
The annual report of the Comptroller and Auditor General for 2016 reveals that a building on Wolfe Tone Street in Dublin city, was leased by the department but never occupied.
Costs of just over €1m in the rental of the premises, which was intended for use by the probation service, were incurred.
A further €1.8m was spent on the settlement of associated legal proceedings that arose on the building.
One million euros were also spent on refurbishing the building.
Subsequent to signing the lease, it was discovered that the building did not have the required planning permission for its intended purpose.
The lease was terminated following legal action which the State was advised to settle.
