NI: Draft Brexit deal contains ‘strong defence’ of Good Friday Agreement

The draft Brexit agreement between the EU and the UK contains strong commitments to the Good Friday Agreement, the Belfast-based Committee on the Administration of Justice (CAJ) has said.
The human rights group has published its initial comments on the draft agreement, made public last week by the European Commission.
In its comments, CAJ states: “There are important formulations in the Preamble and it is necessary to recognise the strength of the formulation of the protection of the Agreement in general and the particular definition of North-South cooperation and avoiding a hard border as ‘overarching requirements’.
“It is a recognition of the importance of our peace settlement that its protection is seen as an essential foundation of a major, multilateral, international negotiation.”
However, it also warned that the recognition of EU citizenship rights for those who choose to claim Irish citizenship will “lead to a division between the rights accruing to British and Irish citizenship in the North”.
It said this was a so far “unresolved issue”.
