NI: ECtHR ruling expected in ex-prisoner's challenge to detention

A judgment is expected from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) this week in the case of a former Northern Ireland prisoner’s challenge to the lawfulness of his detention, the Irish Examiner reports.

Christopher Doherty, 55, has complained that his human rights were breached due to the time taken to conduct several reviews of his detention after his release on license was revoked.

He was released on license in April 1996 after being handed a life sentence for murder.

However, he was returned to prison in March 1997 after being arrested for alleged sexual offences, for which he was not prosecuted.

Mr Doherty’s detention was subsequently reviewed by the Life Sentence Review Board on a number of occasions leading up to his eventual release in 2008.

The ECtHR will rule on Thursday whether the reviews were conducted quickly enough to satisfy international human rights rules.
