Egypt: Lawyer who ‘encouraged rape’ jailed for three years

Nabih al-Wahsh, appearing on satellite TV channel Al-Assema, said it was a “patriotic duty” to harass a woman wearing immodest clothing and a “national duty” to rape her.

He made the remarks during a discussion on draft legislation concerning prostitution and the offence of “inciting debauchery”.

Mr al-Wahsh has now been sentenced to three years in prison and fined 20,000 Egyptian pounds (€950).

Charges were brought against him following a public outcry and a complaint from the National Council for Women’s Rights.

The Council has also filed a complaint with the Supreme Council for Media Regulation about the broadcast.
