Ex-judge jailed for four years following sexual assault conviction

Former Circuit Court judge Gerard O’Brien has been sentenced to five years and nine months’ imprisonment, with the final year and nine months suspended, following his conviction for attempted rape and sexual assault.

The 59-year-old was convicted in late December of sexually abusing six men between 1991 and 1997 while working as a Dublin schoolteacher.

The victims, some of whom were his students, were aged between 17 and 24 at the time, while he was in his 30s.

Mr O’Brien only resigned as a judge after his conviction and after the Attorney General was asked to advise the government and Oireachtas on their options following his conviction, as no sitting judge has ever been removed from office in the history of the State.

Judge Alexander Owens handed down the sentence on Friday.
