Ex-PSNI assistant chief constable under investigation over sex offence allegations

A criminal inquiry has been launched following allegations of sexual offences involving the ex-assistant chief constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

This probe into the behaviour of Will Kerr, now the head of Devon and Cornwall Police in England, was confirmed by the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland.

Alison Hernandez, Devon and Cornwall Police’s crime commissioner, announced the suspension of Mr Kerr yesterday over the allegations.

The PSNI said it would “support the ombudsman as required”.

The Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, said in a statement: “The Police Ombudsman commenced a criminal investigation into serious allegations of sexual offences against a former PSNI senior officer, currently the Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall, on 16 June 2023, using her ‘own motion’ powers.

“The Ombudsman will also consider the circumstances under which the allegations were investigated by PSNI.”
