Facebook sued for $150bn over alleged complicity in Rohingya genocide
Rohingya refugees in the UK and US are suing social media giant Facebook for $150 billion over allegations that the platform helped to promote violence against the minority group in Myanmar.
Facebook previously apologised in 2018 for not “doing enough to help prevent our platform from being used to foment division and incite offline violence” in relation to the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.
A lawsuit was filed in San Francisco yesterday on behalf of around 10,000 Rohingya people in the US, while lawyers in the UK have submitted a pre-action letter to Facebook’s headquarters.
Although US law protects Facebook from liability for content posted by users, the US lawsuit argues that the law of Myanmar should apply instead.
