And finally… cheesed off
French cheese-makers have been left outraged after a Canadian cheese was named the best “Camembert” in the world.
L’Extra, produced near Montreal, was crowned best Camembert at the World Championship Cheese Contest, The Local reports.
It follows a recent defeat for cheese fans when artisan dairies in Normandy lost a 10-year battle with their mass-produced competitors, whose product is often confusingly marketed as “Made in Normandy” despite not sticking to strict production rules for Camembert.
The Paris-Normandie newspaper ran “Normandy Camembert dethroned by a Quebec cheese!” as its horrified headline.
Meanwhile, the Journal de Montréal splashed: “France insulted by a cheese from here”.
