First steps taken to tackle ‘bureaucratic delays’ in home-buying
An implementation group tasked with reducing lengthy conveyancing and probate processes to just eight weeks has met for the first time.
The group has been established to implement the recommendations of a report published in July, which found that conveyancing can currently take an average of 9.5 weeks to 20 weeks while probate typically takes about 18 weeks.
The report suggested that the conveyancing target could be met “in 2025” and the probate target could be met “within a year”.
The implementation group is chaired by Dr Conan McKenna and includes key stakeholders, including the Law Society of Ireland, as well as relevant government departments, agencies and statutory bodies.
Welcoming the group’s first meeting today, Taoiseach Simon Harris said: “As many of our citizens will be aware from first-hand experience, the conveyancing and probate processes have historically been both long and complex.
“Home buyers need not to be bogged down in costly bureaucratic delays. The report has set out a path to improve this experience for people.
“Achieving the national target of eight weeks will require a continued strong focus and a truly collaborative effort across a broad range of stakeholders – state and professional bodies.
“That is why this implementation group is so important. Having all of these key players working together presents a unique opportunity to make significant improvements, and I look forward to seeing the progress in the coming months.”
