Former chief justice and former High Court president appointed to Dubai finance court
Ireland’s former chief justice Frank Clarke and former High Court president Peter Kelly have been sworn in as judges of the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Courts.
The virtual swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, deputy ruler of Dubai and president of the Dubai International Financial Centre.
Established in 2004, the courts administer a “unique common law, English language jurisdiction, which governs commercial and civil disputes, national, regionally, and worldwide”.
In reported remarks at the ceremony, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid spoke of the significance of upholding the rule of law and maintaining the highest transparency and neutrality in the settlement of commercial and civil disputes, in accordance with the highest global benchmarks.
Mr Justice Clarke and Mr Justice Kelly are two of four newly-appointed judges to the courts, alongside US judge William Young and Australian judge Michael Black.
The swearing-in ceremony was also attended by Essa Kazim, governor of DIFC; Justice Zaki Azmi, chief justice of DIFC Courts; and Justice Omar Al Mheiri, director of DIFC Courts.
