Galway law students launch new journal and rebranded podcast
Law students at NUI Galway have teamed up with members of faculty to relaunch the NUI Galway Law Review as an annual peer-reviewed journal and regular legal podcast.
The “modern and student-focused” journal aims to inspire and encourage students in the development of practical legal writing skills, and provide an early platform for potential publications.
Inaugural managing editor Matthew Mulrooney told Irish Legal News: “It is more than just an annual peer-reviewed journal but a place where students can work on their skills through the submission of short, focused pieces – giving them confidence and the inspiration to tackle something more substantial such as the annual journal.
“It also gives valuable experience through the development of these relevant skills in the eyes of employers, which is particularly important because the competition of internships and placements is substantial.”
Mr Mulrooney said traditional journals “often feel outdated to a new generation of students and the prospect of writing for one can be intimidating and well beyond your capabilities”.
The existing Legal Lens podcast run by members of NUI Galway Law Society has been rebranded as Discussions with the NUI Galway Law Review and will feature guests such as solicitor Cian O’Carroll and other legal professionals.
Mr Mulrooney said: “With more and more universities offering a full year’s placement, we focused our podcast on casual discussions with professionals in the top of their fields giving valuable personal insight into specific areas of law in practice.”
He added: “It has been incredible to listen to the feedback to date and the support that has been given from the School of Law itself and the students involved.
“We have a very liberal open-door policy, so if you want to work with us, or submit and article, check out the website and we are very excited to see what the next year will bring.”
