Garda retirement age extension ‘being considered’
An extension of the retirement age for members of An Garda Síochána is “being considered” by government, justice minister Helen McEntee has said.
The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) has called for the current retirement age of 60 to be increased to relieve recruitment pressures on the force.
It would be in line with the temporary increase in the retirement age of sergeants in the Defence Forces, which is also struggling to recruit.
In response to a parliamentary question, Mrs McEntee said an extension of the retirement age “is a complex issue that must have regard to various factors, including the nature of policing and the fast accrual arrangements in place to reflect the particular physical requirements of the role”.
She added: “In relation to the retirement age, a review was commenced and is now being considered.”
